I lean on them to get up when I fall, I clean my room with them, I carry boxes, I climb things, I pet my dogs, I play my violin, I write letters, poems, I touch old books, old houses, I change a tire if I need to, I paint the house, I chop wood, light fire, smoke, cook (in very few occasions), I hammer, type, ...etc.
Dust, dirt, grass, rosin, metal, salt, sugar, water, wood, rocks, wool, silk, plastic...my hands have touched innumerable things, how can you expect them to be soft?
The reason why babies' hands are soft, it's because they haven't lived. So no, I don't want my hands as soft as the babies'.
